Mia and Nomar annually host a competitive soccer match between Hollywood Celebrities joined by members of the US National teams to benefit an extraordinarily and worthwhile cause. In recent years, the Mia Hamm Foundation has organized the Garrett Game; a soccer exhibition game named after Mia's late brother, Garrett. In 1997, Garrett passed away from complications following a Bone Marrow Transplant for Aplastic Anemia. Mia pledged to make a difference by helping others who suffer from the illness by making charitable grants to organizations dedicated to battling bone marrow diseases.
Soccer For Hope sponsors this event in hopes that we can, along side of the Mia Hamm Foundation, raise awareness about BM Failures, the NMDP Registry and support Childrens Hospital LA. We are honored to have Oliver participate and represent these truly important roles: Aplastic Anemia Survivor, father of a BMT patient and Founder of Soccer For Hope. Mia's cause is very near to our hearts and we are so touched by her leadership to educate the public about these extremely important issues.
One of the highlights during the game was the halftime presentation where patients who were suffering from leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases met in person - for the very first time - their bone marrow donors. The donor and recipient meetings recognized all those who have given HOPE to patients in need of a life-saving transplant by joining the National Marrow Donor Program Registry. The Mia Hamm Foundation is a non-profit, national organization dedicated to raising funds and awareness for families in need of a marrow or cord blood transplant and the development of more opportunities for young women to participate in sport. www.miafoundation.org
